The purpose of the Jazz Festival is to instill an appreciation of the jazz genre by exposing students to blues, boogie, ragtime, standards, and other jazz styles using
composed pieces, original arrangements, and improvisation. This event provides an exciting opportunity for your student to perform and hear others play in the Jazz
style. They will also hear a short program by outstanding professional jazz musicians.
This year we are delighted to have The Steve Million/Eric Hochberg Duo as our guest artists. In 1988, Steve Million was a semifinalist in the internationally renowned
Thelonious Monk Piano Competition; that same year, the Missouri native moved to Chicago and never looked back. Around 2004, Million began a rewarding career teaching
privately at the respected Merit School of Music, where he is now Jazz Chair, runs classes in jazz piano, jazz ensembles, and improvisation. In addition, he plays a
regular nightly gig at the popular downtown restaurant Catch 35.
