How to Motivate Students to Play Expressively!

The session will be a musical discussion of repertoire and teaching demonstration of pedagogical ways to develop some of the technique and musical traits and characteristics of Romantic pianism.   Pedagogical discussion and demonstration of the teaching literature from the Russian nationalistic composers will include the music of Alexandre Tansman, Samuel Maykapar, Alexander Tcherepnin, and Alexander Gretchaninoff.

Gretchaninoff’s Musical Gems

The piano music of Alexander Gretchaninoff is an important contribution to the intermediate-level repertoire.  His music serves an important role in the pedagogical literature for the developing pianist.  The lecture- recital will present Gretchaninoff’s unique musical style as a nationalist composer through discussion of his intermediate teaching pieces.

About the Artist:
Dr. Yeeseon Kwon is pianist and associate professor teaching piano musicianship and piano pedagogy in the music conservatory of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Dr. Kwon brings with her expertise and scholarship in piano performance and pedagogy as a teacher and performing artist. Formerly associate editor for Clavier Magazine, Dr. Kwon published numerous new music reviews and articles, and has also authored several articles in Piano Pedagogy Forum and Clavier Companion Magazine.

As editor of keyboard music, Dr. Kwon collaborated with various composers, editing educational piano music and publications, including Written For You Collections, Books 1-4 with Teaching and Practice Guides (F.J.H). Yeeseon Kwon has presented masterclasses and interactive lectures on such topics including Strengths-Based teaching approaches in piano pedagogy, innovative uses of technology in group piano pedagogy, and adult learning pedagogy. Most recently, at the National Conference for Keyboard Pedagogy (NCKP) Dr. Kwon was appointed to the Committee on Teaching Adults.

Dr. Kwon is active nationally and in demand as an adjudicator, workshop clinician, conference and masterclass presenter. Her performances include international solo, duo piano, and collaborative engagements in the United States and Russia. Yeeseon Kwon holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma (D.M.A.) in piano performance and pedagogy as well as Northwestern University (M.M. and B.M).
