The Pedagogy Behind Fostering Artistic Personality

Dr. Helen Marlais

8:30 AM: Registration

9:00 AM: The Essentials for Success: When students practice and are motivated.

Motivate students towards self-directed and intelligent practicing: How to teach students to play standard repertoire pieces musically and with excellent technique. Dr. Marlais will share her insights into how to take a student from the first week of practice toward mastery. She will discuss important practice strategies, four stages to learning any piece, the psychological aspects of preparing a piece during the week, and how all of this supports and develops musicality.

10:30 AM: Break

10:45 AM: Fostering Artistic Personality

Through listening, voicing, rhythm, and positive pedagogy, students will be able to transcend technique and create artistic interpretations at every level. Dr. Marlais will explain how specific physical gestures can support musical playing. The focus will be on posture, healthy and correct body use, and weight control. Then, the seven “touch releases” that will produce excellent technique and quality of sound will be introduced. And lastly, 14 points to nurture musicality will be addressed. Teacher inter-active!

Noon: Lunch

1:00 PM: Encouraging Imaginative Playing
